Windows Server 2012 R2 Reaches End of Support

When considering data security, compliance, and system reliability, a key date for many organizations has occurred - October 10, 2023 marking the end of support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2. What does this mean for your organization and what are your next steps?

What Does End of Support Mean for Me?

Support ending means that after October 10, 2023, Microsoft will no longer provide “security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, technical support, or online technical content updates.” While mainstream support for Windows Server 2012 ended back in October of 2018, Microsoft provided a 5-year extended support window to give customers time to migrate to newer, supported Windows Server versions. This more recent end date marked the end of that extended support. Meaning, that if you had not made changes, your servers would potentially be vulnerable to security threats that could jeopardize your data and the overall performance of your systems.

What Should You Do Now?

With the end of support, if you had not already made a decision you may be worried about having time to complete a migration or even to evaluate and plan your options if it hasn’t been on your radar thus far. Your organization will have 3 main options to choose from including update, replace, or remove from internet access.

You have the option to replace by migrating to Microsoft Azure. With Azure your organization can seamlessly move applications and databases, not only ensuring security, but also taking advantage of cloud benefits. Your other option would be to stay on-premise and update with Microsoft’s latest on-premise server, Windows Server 2022. Lastly, if you do not plan to take either of these actions, you would want to remove Windows Server 2012 from internet access.
